Year 1/2A
Welcome and Meet the Y1 / 2 Team.
Hello and welcome to Y1 /2. I am Mrs Allman, your child’s class teacher. I have over twenty years of teaching experience and have spent the majority of my career teaching in KS1. I am also the Lead Teacher for phonics and early reading at Chapelfield; a role that I am very passionate about. I believe that enabling children to become skilled, enthusiastic readers has the power to change their lives both in school and beyond.
Working with me in our class is Mrs Thompson, a very experienced and skilled Teaching Assistant, who has been with Chapelfield for many years.
We are also lucky to have the expertise of Miss O’Carroll, who works across all KS1 classes to deliver individual tutoring for phonics and reading. Miss O’Carroll worked as a teacher for many years and is highly skilled at delivering this support.
We are all excited to be working with you and your child this year. We believe that teamwork between home and school is essential and look forward to a fun filled year of learning together.

Brief Curriculum Overview
We run a cyclic curriculum to ensure that all pupils have the same learning experiences with our mixed-class structure. Clink the links below to see the full overview.
Cycle A 2027 – 2028
English
Children are taught to read using synthetic phonics. Our phonics programme is Read, Write Inc. Children are taught to decode words using their phonic knowledge and skills. They are also taught to read ‘Red Words’. These are words that are not phonetically regular. Words like ‘the’, ‘was’ and ‘said’ are all Red Words.
During Read, Write Inc lessons, children are also taught to spell words, transcribe dictated sentences and construct sentences of their own.
Writing is also taught in discrete English lessons each week too. We use Literacy Shed to give the children exciting stimuli for their writing. This can sometimes be a wonderful book, or an interesting animation or film.
Maths
We follow White Rose Maths. Please have a look at the Year Overview to see which units we cover each term. We also develop the children’s maths fluency and mental calculation strategies every afternoon. Early Morning maths is used to revisit and consolidate the learning we have encountered previously in our maths lessons.

Class Routines
Uniform and School Equipment
Please ensure that your child has everything they need for school each day. This includes sensible waterproof shoes and a coat. Our class is outside of the main school building and so we frequently need to venture outside, even if it is raining.
Please ensure your child has a water bottle in school every day. This should be filled with fresh water each day at home. We do not permit juice.
PE is on Monday this half term. This will change to Thursday after this half term. PE kits should come into school on the first day of each term in a drawstring bag. We suggest that they stay in school all term and are taken home at half term to be washed. Please put your child’s name on every item of clothing so that we can ensure nothing gets lost.
Self-Care Skills
In KS1 we encourage the children to develop their independence with self-care activities. Please help your child to practise getting dressed and undressed on their own. Please help them to learn how to put their own socks and shoes on as this can be a tricky skill. We would suggest that Velcro fasteners can often be easier for children to manage on their own.
Please help your child to learn how to use a knife and fork correctly.
It is important to also help your child to manage the toilet. Please practise how to manage tights and fastenings on trousers. Please help your child to learn how to wipe themselves correctly and help them to get into the habit of washing their hands afterwards. There will always be a member of staff on hand to give your child a helping hand with all of these activities if they need our support. However, the children will feel so proud of themselves once they master them – inside school and at home!
Snack
Your child can bring a piece of fruit or a yoghurt for their morning snack. We also have fruit available in class for the children to choose from.
Please do not send in other food items as they will be taken away and given back to the adult that collects at home time. This is because we have children with severe food allergies in school.
Morning Drop Off and Home Time Collection
There will be a member of staff available at the bottom gate every day to welcome your child each day. We ask that you say goodbye to your child there. Your child will then be welcomed again by a member of staff at the classroom door.
Learning at Home
We ask that the children read a minimum of three times a week. However, the more frequently your child reads to you, the better their progress in reading will be. Please remember to log on to Oxford Owl and complete the reading homework on there too. The children really enjoy the phonics quizzes! There are also hundreds of free books for your child to read in the e. Library section of the web page.
We send regular links to our Read, Write Inc Virtual Classroom lessons. Please watch these regularly with your child and revisit them often. They are a fantastic way to help your child with their reading.
Please ensure that your child’s reading pack is in school every-day. In Read, Write Inc children’s books are changed as their group moves onto a new book in school and so there is no set day of the week for this.
We sign Reading Records and give chart stickers on Friday.
Weekly Spellings
Spellings will begin after the Autumn half term holiday. They are given out on Friday and tested the following Thursday. Please ensure that your child’s spelling book comes into school on Thursday.
Sometimes I will set home learning tasks on a Friday. This will not be every week. I make the tasks fun and engaging so that you have fun completing them together. They are often design, craft, music or art based. I usually allow a week for the task to be completed.
Home learning tasks are voluntary. A prize will be given to those children who complete them.
