School Premiums
Pupil Premium
What is Pupil Premium?
Pupil Premium is a funding initiative from the government aimed at improving the educational outcomes of children who face certain challenges, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. The funding is designed to help schools provide additional support for pupils who may need extra help to reach their full potential. This includes children who are eligible for free school meals, children in care, and those whose parents are currently serving in the armed forces.
What is Pupil Premium Funding used for?
At Chapelfield, we use our Pupil Premium funding to support a variety of educational initiatives tailored to the individual needs of these pupils. This might include staff development and training, one-to-one or small group tuition, enhanced learning resources including additional targeted staff support, extra-curricular activities, and support for emotional and social development.
Who benefits from Pupil Premium funding?
We are committed to ensuring that every child, regardless of their background, has access to the best possible education and opportunities to succeed. We have high expectations for all of our pupils, and are committed to ensuring, through excellent teaching and a nurturing approach, that every child can fulfil their potential. The Pupil Premium funding helps us bridge any gaps in learning, ensuring that all our pupils are given the support they need to thrive academically and personally.
Our pupils achieve well – however the levels of attainment for pupils who are disadvantaged is not at the level of their peers. We are committed to doing everything we can to close this attainment gap. The Pupil Premium plan is written in order to remove the barriers to learning and progress which we have identified for our pupils.
The targeted interventions identified on our strategy supports children who have lower attainment on entry to school to make accelerated progress, with the aim of them reaching age-related expectations. These interventions support children to progress socially and academically as well as academically.
Pupil premium is not a personal budget for individual pupils and schools do not have to spend pupil premium so that it solely benefits pupils who meet the funding criteria. Pupil premium can be used to support other pupils with identified needs, or used for whole class interventions that will benefit all pupils. At Chapelfield we take both a personalised and whole class approach to spending our Pupil Premium funding.
How does the school know if Pupil Premium funding is having the desired impact?
At our school, we carefully monitor and evaluate the impact of Pupil Premium funding to ensure it is making a positive difference in the lives of our pupils. We track pupil progress through regular assessments including both internal and external data, observations, and data analysis, comparing outcomes before and after interventions. All pupils are discussed at Pupil Progress meetings which happen termly to ensure any needs are identified and progress is being monitored.
We also gather a range of feedback from staff, parents, and pupils themselves to understand the wider effects of our support. This is tracked through Provision Map.
Through this comprehensive approach, we ensure that the funding is being used effectively to achieve the desired outcomes and can be best targeted for the year ahead.
