P.E
Intent
Chapelfield Primary School recognises and values the importance of Physical Education. We aim to develop a fun, high quality physical education curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in sports and other physically demanding activities. We do this through looking at the National Curriculum objectives and meeting them/applying them through a range of sports.
It is our intention to build a curriculum that enables children to develop knowledge, skills and particularly vocabulary in a broad range of sporting activities, as well as implementing our School Values and transferable life skills also taught in other curriculum areas. Through a wide variety of sports, we aim to raise the profile of PE and more recently, aim to introduce them to a selection of more unusual sports, which we hope the children will enjoy and pursue out of school.
The progression of skills as the children move through school will meet the end of Key Stage objectives in the National Curriculum.
Implementation
In the EYFS physical education is an important part of our curriculum, developing both fine and gross motor control throughout the year. In Autumn specific focus’ are placed in our large outdoor play area. Children are given opportunity to develop gross motor skills with a range of climbing and balancing equipment, use of bikes and scooter and a variety of bat and ball games. In Spring we introduce more formal P.E. lessons trying to focus each term on a specific set of skills eg. ball skills, early gymnastics, dance and athletics. This provides children with a strong start to their P.E. as they move through school.
The PE curriculum for Years 1 to 6 is taught mainly though Bury Sports Partnership across the school year. The use of specialist coaches enables the children to be taught to a high level in the different disciplines. They are timetabled to work with each class and act as a coach to teaching staff in developing their skills. The objectives are shared with staff and displayed in the hall display to be referred to during the units.
We offer extra- curricular sports also through Bury Sports Partnership twice a week and specific year groups are selected based on certain criteria, for example high number of Pupil Premium children or previous low attainment in PE . We also offer our Y6 children an annual visit to PGL which is a residential , encouraging physical activity and complementing the objectives covered in the National Curriculum throughout school.
Children in KS2 (year groups changing at the moment due to post pandemic situation) have intensive swimming lessons, with the aim that all children will be able to swim 25 metres unaided by the time they leave Chapelfield.
Structure/Content of PE Lessons
We will ensure that each PE lesson includes:
- Safety reminders- there will be reference to the hall display.
- Warm- up/fitness introduction to the session.
- Vocabulary made a priority throughout lessons to link with school curriculum and whole school focus.
Impact
Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness levels of all pupils, including EYFS, at Chapelfield through sporting skills taught and underpinning disciplines that PE promotes. Through links with other curriculum areas such as Science and RHSE, we aim to promote healthy living and an enjoyment of sporting activities. We aim for all children, regardless of ability to partake in PE and make good progress.
At the end of every half term, the PE lead together with the Bury Sports Coaches liaise regarding outcomes of pupils and focus on pupils who are underachieving.
