Geography
Why do we teach Geography?
Geography inspires children to develop curiosity and fascination about the world and people around them. Children will learn about the diversity of Earth and natural and human environments. They will explore Earth’s key physical and human features and investigate the impact of trade and technology. Geography gives children an awareness of their position in the wider world.
The national curriculum for History aims to ensure that all pupils:
- Develop contextual knowledge of the location of globally significant places – both terrestrial and marine – including their defining physical and human characteristics and how these provide a geographical context for understanding the actions of processes.
- Understand the processes that give rise to key physical and human geographical features of the world, how these are interdependent and how they bring about spatial variation and change over time.
- Are competent in the geographical skills needed to: collect, analyse and communicate with a range of data gathered through experiences of fieldwork that deepen their understanding of geographical processes.
- Interpret a range of sources of geographical information, including maps, diagrams, globes, aerial photographs and Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
- Communicate geographical information in a variety of ways, including through maps, numerical and quantitative skills and writing at length.
How do we approach Geography at Chapelfield?
We aim to give our children an understanding of local Geography and where Britain sits within the wider world. We will develop their knowledge of diverse places, people and a range of environments. The start of learning geography for the young child is an awareness of their immediate environment. Photographs, pictures and plans of the school and its immediate area stimulate interest and questions which lead to an exploration of the local area. Comparing children’s knowledge and experience of places in Britain with those in a different country is also important. Children are also encouraged to ask questions, use geographical vocabulary and give their own views on subjects eg. environmental issues such as pollution and climate change. Geography is taught in a cycle along with History and R.E. across the year. Children will cover two topics of Geography per year. Topics are blocked into Cycle A and Cycle B and are taught in accordance with the National Curriculum with meaningful cross-curricular links made where possible.
Within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), Geography is encompassed within ‘understanding of the world’, ‘mathematics’, and ‘communication and language’ through a combination of focused teaching and hands on experiences. Staff use and model effective and high-quality language to encourage children to talk about what they notice and to ask questions.

Assessment
Assessment in KS1 and KS2 begins with an initial assessment of geographical vocabulary which informs learning. Children are then exposed to new vocabulary and knowledge, which is supported by the use of the class Geography display, leading to a final assessment of the unit. In this assessment children demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the key geographical vocabulary and facts covered.
