Computing
Intent
Chapelfield Primary School recognises and values how technology is changing our lives. Through teaching computing, we equip our children to work and play using technology. Children learn the skills to help them stay safe online beyond the school environment and how to make informed decisions. We encourage children to think about the information they share and how they conduct themselves in a digital world.
It is our intention to enable children to find, explore, analyse, exchange and present information. We also focus on developing the skills necessary for children to be able to use information in an effective way.
Computing skills are a major factor in enabling children to be confident, creative and independent learners and it is our intention that children have every opportunity available to allow them to achieve this.
We aim to prepare out children for a world where the jobs they will be going into are technology rich and not yet even conceived.
Purple Mash Computing incorporates coding, computer hardware and research projects to stimulate and challenge pupils whilst fulfilling the criteria of the Computing National Curriculum for Key Stages 1 and 2 in England.
The progression of skills as the children move through school will meet the end of Key Stage objectives in the National Curriculum.
Implementation
The Computing curriculum is taught mainly though the Purple Mash Computing Scheme. In the EYFS, computing is experienced through a broad range of play based learning. The role play areas feature ICT scenarios based on experiences in the real world such as tills, computers and telephones. Children have the opportunity to use a range of devices to develop letter formation of apply phonics knowledge using the Interactive White Board, iPads and laptops. The EYFS resources within Purple Mash are designed to integrate into the day-today routine and set-up of an early years setting with opportunities for using Mini Mash or Purple Mash as part of the Early Years curriculum to support children in working towards early learning goals.
Children follow a cycle of learning to ensure all objective are met by the end of Year 6. Computing is taught half termly to year groups 1 to 6, alternating between Computer Science, Information Technology and Digital Literacy. Below is an outline of the units they will cover.

Impact
Our children enjoy and value the curriculum we deliver. Teachers try to explain the why and not just the how behind the learning. Finding the right balance with technology and a healthy life style one they can continue to build in the next stage of their education and beyond. Children showcase their learning through display work, presentations and are encouraged to publish their work so it can be celebrated, in class or in assembly. Evidence of learning though technology like Sumdog, TimesTables Rockstars and Purplemash allow teachers to observe learning and inform future planning.
