Art, Design and Technology
Intent
At Chapelfield Primary School, we believe that our Art and Design curriculum should engage, inspire and challenge all children to develop their creativity, imagination and equip all pupils with the knowledge and skills that they need to experiment and invent their own works of art in a visual and tactile form.
Our curriculum aims to develop the children’s skills, concepts and knowledge in a variety of areas including: drawing, painting, printing, textiles and sculpture. Children will explore and evaluate the works of a diverse range of significant artists and designers that are local, national and international whilst also being able to evaluate the effectiveness of their own and their peers’ artwork.
We want all children to leave Chapelfield with a passion and love of the subject as it has allowed them to build a natural inquisitiveness and an appreciation of art in all its forms which they may carry with them throughout their lives.
National Curriculum aims:
- Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
- Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design
techniques - Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
- Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms
Implementation
In EFYS, the development of children’s artistic and cultural awareness supports their imagination and creativity. We believe, it is important that children have regular opportunities to engage with the arts, enabling them to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials. Children see, hear and participate in activities to develop their understanding, self-expression, vocabulary and ability to communicate through the arts.
How Art and Design in EYFS links to Year 1
The knowledge and skills that children will develop throughout each topic within Art and Design has been mapped sequentially across each year group and is progressive throughout the school. The emphasis on knowledge ensures that children understand the context of the artwork, as well as the artists that they are learning about and being inspired by. A similar systematic approach to the development of artistic skills means that children are given opportunities to express their creative imagination, as well as practising and developing skills in the key processes of art: drawing, painting, printing, textiles and sculpture. We encourage the children to produce works of art that challenge and extend their knowledge and abilities as well as being a platform to express themselves.
Design and technology has been topics have been planned in a similar structure, ensuring a progression of skills throughout KS1 and KS2. Starting with safety and hygiene, children are introduced to a variety of nutritious foods and taught how to use cutlery and cooking utensils safely. Learning about the different food groups and how a balanced diet is required for optimal nutrition, we encourage children to design and make healthy dishes.
Impact
At Chapelfield, pupil will progress in sustained learning and transferrable skills through art and design technology. We want all children to have developed a passion for art and creativity, working both independently and collaboratively. Pupils will have grown in confidence when using a range of tools and techniques, becoming artists that can apply the skills and knowledge that they have developed throughout the years and respond critically to their own and others’ work. Children will become passionate about healthy lifestyles and be confident in preparing healthy dishes.
